Prayer

Completely not many people on a planet were possible manage the unique culture, and, of course, such multinational country as Russia isn’t an exception. Nevertheless, the people with Finno-Ugric roots – Maris have saved and the traditional way has informed till today: a life, culture and even the religion concerning paganism. Despite numerous interdictions from the imperial and Soviet government, the strongest influences of Orthodoxy, Islam, atheism mari continued to spend secretly prayers in the sacred groves. Only in the nineties 20 centuries mass ceremonies have been again officially resolved by the authorities. Though, of course, for today the people part mari all the same became orthodox, the part has accepted Islam and speaks in the Tatar language. In 16 century migration of a part of meadow Maris on the northeast, in connection with the violent reference in Christianity of these people has begun. This group В«east MarisВ» has located in the southwest of Sverdlovsk area, the southeast Perm and the north of Bashkiria.  On July, 7th, 2011 prayer on a sacred mountain nearby to village Sarsy of Krasnoufimsky area of Sverdlovsk area has taken place. THIS DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE!

Road of Life

Road of Life

Life on the Uzkoy AUJD – Alapaevsk narrow-gauge railway. This unusual train is one of the longest narrow-gauge railways in the world, both on the Road of Life in the besieged Leningrad and for the bringing to the village of food and other essentials. People appreciate ‘Uzkoy’, as they call it, because for them it’s a vital artery. In most localities the railway is the only link to the ‘mainland’. I was there twice in 2009 and 2011. Nothing in these two years has changed. There’s no work and it isn’t clear that there ever will be again. Nothing new is built and the old is gradually destroyed. People are angry at the journalists who tell stories about these issues (because the film L’amour Station almost killed us at the station Kalach). There’s not a lot of money in the area, but the people (some 30 to 100 residents in each of the eight villages) remain good-hearted, and will offer food and accommodation to visitors, if of course one can gain their trust. In the Soviet system of the 1930s the railway was a symbol of the Revolution, technological change and a bright future. By the beginning of the 21st century the future became the past. Time stopped. There is little nostalgia.

Estranged

“…under the conditions of modern factory production the average worker is little more than a replaceable cog in a gigantic and impersonal production apparatus. Where armies of hired operatives perform monotonous and closely supervised tasks, workers have essentially lost control over the process of production, over the products which they produce, and over the relationships they have with each other. As a consequence they have become estranged from their very human nature, which Marx understood to be free and productive activity.

A Poacher’s Daily Work

This is the story of a poacher’s daily work. A poacher‘s daily bread doesn’t come easy. Preparation, netting,  selling the fish. There isn’t such a thing as bad weather for poachers, they do their work from start to finish. Poachers are at risk of being caught by environmental inspectors every day. They poach to protect their families from hunger.
